Banned driver jailed after chase

A disqualified driver involved in a high speed car chase with two police cars in Londonderry has been jailed for nine months at the city's Crown Court.

Judge Desmond Marrinan was told an Audi A40 driven by Patrick McCloskey (24), from Altcar Park, swerved in front of police on the Skeoge dual carriageway in February, 2009.

McCloskey then turned onto the Buncrana Road and drove towards the border with the police cars, lights flashing and sirens on, close behind.

He slowed and, as police tried to stop him, he did a U-turn and escaped. He was arrested several days later after his finger print was found in the car in the Galliagh area of the city.

McCloskey, who had 35 previous road traffic convictions, pleaded guilty to charges of dangerous driving, driving without insurance, failing to stop and to driving while disqualified arising out of the incident.

Defence barrister Joe Brolly said McCloskey “has a fixation with cars”.

Judge Marrinan said his actions had put the lives of other road users at risk. McCloskey was also banned from driving for three years and fined £200.
