Belfast hospital fire forces patients out

One hundred and thirty patients, some being treated for brain injuries, had to be moved yesterday after a fire at a Belfast hospital.

The temporary evacuation of wards took place after a gas cylinder ignited at the Royal Victoria Hospital.

Fire officers managed to extinguish the blaze but services at the hospital will continue to be disrupted tomorrow.

All adult outpatient appointments at the RVH in the morning have been cancelled, along with some surgeries.

A section of the Falls Road was closed as a result of the incident, which occurred near to a new critical care unit.

Other facilities, such as the Royal Hospital for Sick Children and the maternity unit, will not be affected by tomorrow's disruption.

Further details are available on a patient helpline - 0800 9801100.
