Belfast: PSNI officer issues warning over 'thief caller'

By Staff Reporter

Detectives are appealing for information following three distraction-burglary type incidents in west Belfast on Saturday.

Shortly before 11am, police received reports that a man had called to a house in Lawnview Street, telling the female resident he was there to check the water pipes. The woman let him in, but after he left she realised boxes in one of the rooms had been moved. It is not believed anything was stolen.

A similar incident occurred in the Old Westland Road area when a man wanting to check water pipes had tried to gain entry to a house, however the resident didn't let him in. And police later received reports that a house in Leopold Gardens was ransacked.

Det Insp Nicky Scott said: "We are investigating a possible link in these three incidents. I would appeal to anyone in the area who noticed any suspicious activity to contact detectives at Woodbourne police station on the non-emergency number 101."
