Body found in car at foot of Sligo cliff

The body of a man in his 30s was recovered from an overturned car at the foot of a 13m cliff on the Sligo coast yesterday evening.

Gardai were attempting last night to confirm whether the sole occupant of the car was a 32-year-old man from Omagh, Co Tyrone, who was reported missing at 11am yesterday.

The alarm was raised at around 4pm yesterday by day trippers at the popular seaside resort of Mullaghmore, who spotted the Northern Ireland-registered car at the bottom of the cliffs.

A major rescue mission got under way, involving the Irish Coast Guard helicopter, the RNLI coast guard, firefighters from Bundoran and Sligo and gardai. Diving officer Francis Jenkins said there was only one man in the car, which had a wrecked bicycle lying alongside it at the foot of the cliff.
