Brave Edna to celebrate her century
In 2003 Belfast pensioner Edna Hulme was afraid to leave her house after she was the victim of a violent robbery.
Now, seven years on, she is set to celebrate her 100th birthday tomorrow surrounded by family and friends.
A modest Mrs Hulme said: “It’s not an achievement because if it wasn’t for other good people I wouldn’t be sitting here.”
She remembers little of her traumatic ordeal which began when three masked men forced their way into her home.
She said: “The men looked to be between 16 and 18 years of age and they wanted money for drugs.”
The thieves made off with a small sum of money and Mrs Hulme suffered a black eye and bruising to her face.
Lord Mayor of Belfast Naomi Long will present the centenarian with her congratulatory telegram from the Queen tomorrow.
Thirty friends and family will continue the celebrations at the Wellington Park Hotel.
