Brick hits policewoman as she deals with yobs
A female police officer has been struck on the back of the head with a brick as she tried to deal with anti-social youths in Newtownabbey.
A neighbourhood policing team was responding to a call about youths causing annoyance in the Glenabbey Drive area at 4pm when the officer was struck by the missile thrown from an area known locally as The Viaduct.
Area commander, Chief Inspector Paul Hillman, said that the incident was “unacceptable” and called for the local community to give their continued support and work alongside the local neighbourhood policing team to resolve the problems facing the area.
Last year, residents attended a meeting of Newtownabbey District Policing Partnership and highlighted a catalogue of incidents regarding antisocial behaviour in the alleyway between Abbeycroft Drive and Glenabbey Crescent.
Local people said that their lives were made a misery following a spate of hedge, fence and tank and wheelie bin fires.
Ken Robinson, Ulster Unionist MLA for the area, said he was saddened at the news that a police officer had been hurt.
