Briton was unlawfully killed in US bar hold-up

A British man on a road trip through the United States was fatally shot when a gunman opened fire during an armed raid on a saloon bar in Amarillo, Texas, an inquest has heard.

Father-of-one Thomas Reeve (28) was hit by a bullet in the right upper chest as bar goers were ordered to the floor during the late night robbery.

Mr Reeve, from Maidenhead, Berkshire, was travelling from San Francisco to Florida with two friends when the shooting, at the Spotted Pony, took place on November 5 last year.

An inquest at Windsor Coroner's Court heard that he had arrived at the bar with friends James Charlton and Lara Haim.

In a statement read by Berkshire coroner Peter Bedford, Mr Charlton described how he saw a man with a bandana covering his face holding a gun, shouting at people to get to the ground and hand over their money. He said: “At one point, he pointed the gun towards Tom and fired.”

The inquest heard a man has been jailed for Mr Reeve’s murder. The coroner recorded a verdict of unlawful killing.
