Just hours left to bid begins for Best's coat and Rory McIlroy hat as concerts boost cancer appeal fund to the tune of £4,000

By Aisling Scally

Time is running out to get your hands on a last-minute original gift for a loved one this Christmas

There are just a few hours left to place a bid on one of the enticing lots being auctioned off in aid of the Belfast Telegraph’s Christmas Appeal.

The Appeal is aiming to raise £50,000 to contribute towards the CLIC Sargent Homes From Home Appeal.

Every penny raised will go directly to the children's cancer charity to build two respite centres to used by the families of children undergoing cancer treatment.

The £3.7m centres will be located close to treatment centres at the Royal Belfast Hospital for Sick Children and Belfast City Hospital, so families can stay, alleviating the stress and cost of travelling to Belfast.

In a last push to hit our Christmas Appeal target by Monday, we are urging readers to get bidding on the auction.

Win: George Best's coat and help cancer charity

The auction must end at midnight tonight, so time is running out to secure an extra special gift.

So far our most popular lots are:

  • A golf club signed by Major winner Graeme McDowell.
  • An Irish Open golf hat and official programme signed by Rory McIlroy, Darren Clarke, Padraig Harrington and McDowell.
  • George Best's jacket as donated by his sister Barbara McNarry.
  • A luxury overnight stay in the Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park, including breakfast, dinner and a bottle of wine chosen by the sommelier.
  • A limited edition Terry Bradley print signed by the artist.
  • Two tickets to the CLIC Sargent Sports Ball on March 14, including a private meeting with hosts Freddie Flintoff and Barry McGuigan.

We also have 22 other amazing gift ideas, like tickets to Girls Aloud, tickets to Down Royal's Boxing Day meet, a signed Northern Ireland team shirt, a signed Belfast Giants shirt, dinner with Stephen Nolan and a Paradise Lost day spa package at the Galgorm Resort and Spa, to name but a few.

Eimear McCooey, fundraising manager at CLIC Sargent, said: “The auction got off to a flying start, and we weren’t surprised with so many amazing prizes. Some lots have proved to be very popular like Graeme McDowell’s signed golf club, however there are still some items which can be picked up at affordable prices today. So why not make someone’s Christmas extra special, while also helping local children and young people with cancer?”

Eimear also thanked everyone who had placed a bid so far.

“You can be absolutely sure that all of your money will be going to our Homes From Home Appeal.

“We’d also like to say a sincere thank you to all the local businesses, organisations and celebrities who kindly donated the amazing prizes. With everyone’s support, we can hopefully meet our target of £50,000 by Christmas Eve and make this a Christmas to remember for so many children and young people across Northern Ireland.”
