Best Garden - Divis Tower

Sponsored by Westland Horticulture

As the Best Garden award was about to be announced, the residents of Divis Tower in west Belfast were hoping and praying for a win. To help seal the deal they had their fingers crossed for that extra bit of gala night good luck.

The garden at the 200ft tower block has won a few awards in the past, but resident Frankie Hutchinson said the Making the Difference award is particularly special, as it recognises the input from all 20 residents involved in the project.

He said everyone “chips in” to make their beautiful garden so special and as barbecue season approaches, the fruit and vegetables grown in the garden will provide residents with some homegrown soul food.

After collecting their award, Frankie Hutchinson, Gerard Mullan and Jim Taggart explained they were looking |forward to a few celebratory beers.

Mr Hutchinson said: “I’m absolutely over the moon. We had our fingers crossed and we just hoped.

“I feel like I’ve won an Oscar. Colin Firth eat your heart out!

“It’s our little slice of Eden in suburbia and it’s great to be recognised for what we are all doing.

“There is great camaraderie among the residents here. Over the summer it is great for all of us to get together and have our tea or coffee.

“It’s somewhere to meet. The residents lounge is never used. The garden is the centrepiece of the whole community,” Mr Hutchinson added.

Fellow resident Gerard Mullan was beaming with pride and said he had a wonderful night at the glittering gala event at the Grand Opera House.

“We are extremely happy to have won,” he said.

“The garden is good for the people working in it and really helps build the community.”

Mary Campbell from Westland Horticulture said: “Congratulations to everyone at Divis Tower.

“The Making the Difference awards are a great idea and the whole ceremony was absolutely fantastic.

“There is so much doom and gloom at the moment, with so many people being out of work.

“There should be more events like this one.

“It’s fantastic to see a community come together to make a difference and then celebrate that.”
