Best Street - Tavanagh Street

When it was announced Tavanagh Street had won the Best Street award, residents were stunned. The area in south Belfast where they live has suffered from great deprivation, but caring neighbours who are there for each other when times are hard makes life a |little easier.

Coronation Street actor Charlie Lawson, who presented the Best Street award to the residents of Tavanagh Street, said: “I’m |delighted for them.

“The more we can get back to people looking after each other on streets the better. It starts simply like that and I think it’s a great thing.

“I think it’s a great award and well done to them all. It’s so simple. All you have to do is knock on someone’s door and look after them.

“Before David Cameron started with his Big Society, the people of Northern Ireland have been doing it for years.”

Over the bitterly cold winter when the water crisis was affecting families across Northern Ireland, neighbours rallied to make sure everyone had water and food.

Resident Margaret Couchman said: “I’m so shocked we won, because it doesn’t look a nice street.

“But we are touching peoples lives in whatever way we can and it has been noticed.

“We look after people who are living with just the bare necessities. It’s about making friends and helping people out.

“For all the time you are on this earth you might as well do some good.

“Every wee bit matters. If everyone just did a wee bit, what a world we would all |live in.”

Wayne Millar, from Airtricity, said it had been a pleasure to have been involved with such an inspiring event and praised the |residents of Tavanagh Street for the time and effort they give each other.

He said: “It’s inspiring and rewarding for Airtricity to be part of such an important event.”
