Church of Ireland Bishops have said there is "little appetite" across the entire island to redefine marriage.

A statement on "Human Sexuality in the Context of Christian Belief" was read out to the General Synod in Armagh by the Bishop of Meath and Kildare.

Speaking on behalf of the House of Bishops, the Most Reverend Pat Storey announced that the church's marriage service "remains unchanged" due to a lack of consensus in General Synod, the House of Bishops and the island-wide church.

"Thus… marriage may be solemnised only between a man and a woman," the statement reads.

"No liturgy or authorised service is provided therefore for any other situation."

It also states that the Church has already made it clear to clergy that it is "not possible to proscribe the saying of prayers in personal and pastoral situations" but if they are invited to offer prayer following a same-sex marriage union then it "must remain consonant with the spirit and teaching of the Church".

The Archbishops and Bishops also noted that there was "little appetite to discuss further these issues" among parishes.

Their statement concluded by recognising there is no simple solution for issues of human sexuality.

"But with compassion, humility and concern, we offer our continued commitment to attentive listening and to respectful discussion," it said.
