A Co Laois man has been charged with paying for sexual services in Northern Ireland.

In just the second case of its kind, John Bergin (35) was charged with paying for sexual services on October 18 this year.

Bergin, from Fassidinas New Row, Abbeyleix, was also charged at Newry Magistrates Court with having cocaine on the same date.

None of the facts were opened to Newry Magistrates Court but a police officer said she believed she could connect Bergin to each of the offences.

It is understood however that Bergin was arrested when police searched a house on Monaghan Street in the city. A man and a woman have appeared in the same court charged with controlling prostitution for gain.

In court yesterday, a prosecuting lawyer said the "full file" was due to be received by December 21 so she was seeking an adjournment until December 23.

Although defence counsel Kevin O'Hare asked for legal aid to be granted, District Judge Eamon King raised a chuckle in the court when he told the lawyer: "If he can pay for certain other services, I think he can maybe pay for this."
