Derry assault accused ‘is a complete time-bomb’

A Londonderry alcoholic accused of attacking a hotel bar manager has been refused bail by a judge who said he was a “complete time-bomb waiting to go off”.

The victim needed staples for head wounds inflicted during the assault with a metre-long metal rod in Maghera, Co Londonderry, last week.

Prosecutors said Paul O'Donnell (27) picked the victim out after he was ejected from Walsh's Hotel and returned later armed with the bar.

Refusing bail, Mr Justice McLaughlin said: “That metal bar could have gone into this man's eye, it could have gone into his stomach, his heart or lungs.

“He (O'Donnell) will have to get himself cured in prison then he might be fit to come out and live with the rest of us. I'm not going to have the finger pointed at me for somebody who is just a complete time-bomb waiting to go off.”
