Families in Londonderry who had to leave their homes early on Tuesday morning due to an explosion in a car were only able to return after nearly 12 hours.

The blast took place at about 3am on Circular Road in the Creggan area of the city.

Some families were forced to leave their homes while the police set up a cordon around the area and Army bomb disposal officers examined the scene.

During the course of the morning a number of controlled explosions were carried out on the car before it was taken away for further examination.
