Donegal postman dies in harvester collision

A postman was killed instantly yesterday evening when his van crashed into a stationary combine harvester.

The postman, named locally as Alec Carolan (32), from the Common in Lifford, Co Donegal, died in the accident which happened at Drumnabrady, between Raphoe and Ballin- drait in Co Donegal at 4pm yesterday. He was driving towards Raphoe and had just driven over the brow of a hill into the sight of a combine harvester which had pulled in off the road to let cars pass.

Gardai believe he may have “panic braked” 100 yards from the combine harvester, causing his van to go out of control and collide with the machine.

Last night relatives were attempting to contact the dead man's mother, who left for the US yesterday on a holiday.
