Double murder charge dentist remanded again

A dentist accused of murdering his wife and his ex-lover's husband was remanded in custody for another four weeks today.

Dr Colin Howell, aged 50, appeared at North Antrim Magistrates' Court via a video link from Maghaberry Prison, near Lisburn, County Antrim, where he is being held.

He is due to appear before District Judge Richard Wilson again on April 6, the same day as his co-accused, Hazel Stewart, 45, who is also facing a double murder charge.

Howell, from Sea Road, Castlerock, County Londonderry, and Stewart, from Coleraine, are accused of murdering Howell's wife Lesley, 31, and Stewart's first husband, Police Constable Trevor Buchanan, 32.

Their bodies were found in a car filled with fumes in Castlerock in May 1991, the victims of an apparent suicide pact.

But it emerged last January that police had launched a murder investigation and both Howell and Stewart were later charged with the murders.

It has been claimed they were having an affair at the time of the deaths.

Howell, who once ran a dental practice in Ballymoney, County Antrim, is also facing a series of charges of drugging and sexually assaulting a number of women.
