Down Royal: Winter fur de rigueur for festive race-goers

By Victoria O'Hara

Winter hats and coats were the fashion at the annual Boxing Day racing event in Down Royal.

Crowds of people, both young and old, made the journey to the Lisburn racecourse yesterday to have a flutter on the Sport of Kings and enjoy the atmosphere with family.

Race-goers took to social media to celebrate their winnings throughout the day.

Jay Kerr wrote: "Big day at the races £28 up already #downroyal"

The Boxing Day event came just days after Ryanair boss Michael O'Leary donated £100,000 of winnings to charity YouthAction NI.

He had pledged to hand over any winnings his stable could make at the Down Royal Festival of Racing and in all, £100,000 was won from three races at the event.
