Drama as man is plucked from Thames

Emergency services were involved in a dramatic rescue operation yesterday after a man fell from a landmark bridge.

The 45-year-old plunged into the River Thames from Westminster Bridge in central London at about 4pm. It followed a tense stand-off with emergency services which lasted several hours.

A Metropolitan Police spokesman said: “We were called at 11.21am to reports of a man standing on Westminster Bridge.

“Local officers were involved in liaison with the man. At approximately 4pm the man fell into the river.”

The man was pulled from the water by a RNLI lifeboat team and then taken ashore by London Fire Brigade's marine unit. A spokeswoman for the London Ambulance Service said that the man was being treated for minor injuries at nearby St Thomas' Hospital.

A police spokesman said that he was in a stable condition.
