Campbell College scored an A-level hat-trick with best friends Matthew Crowther (3 A*s and 1 A), Jake Bodels (3 A*s and 1 A) and James Nelson (3 A*s) all heading to Edinburgh University to study medicine.

"I'm happy to be heading to Edinburgh with my best friends," Head Boy Matthew, (18) from Crawfordsburn told the Belfast Telegraph.

"We have been in the same classes since first year and have talked about doing medicine together for years."

Also delighted with their results were Mohammad Rashid and Thomas Gillan, who each achieved 4 A*s.

Dundonald teen Mohammad (18), who studied chemistry, mathematics, further mathematics and physics, has secured a place at Cambridge's Corpus Christi College to read chemical engineering.

"I hope to be a chemical engineer or to go into finance or education, the sky's the limit," he said. "I'm happy to have made my parents proud."

Meanwhile, trilingual boarder John Kennedy, whose family live in Barcelona, celebrated A*s in Spanish and French and a B in sports science. John (17), who has opted to study French and Spanish at Queen's, said: "My parents are from Dublin but I had lived in Spain until the age of 15.

"I did better than I expected and after I graduate from Queen's I am hoping to go into interpreting. I may go back to Barcelona, but at the moment I am happy and settled in Northern Ireland."

Headmaster Mr Robert Robinson MBE congratulated all the school's A-level pupils. He stated: "This has been a great year group. As a collective they epitomise all that the college represents; reflecting our core values of leadership and service they have given their all to the college.

"High achievers in many different fields and proof that we produce men of character who will go on to achieve great things in many walks of life."
