Education expert Ken Robinson set to address Derry conferences

By Brendan McDaid

One of the world’s leading authorities on education and achievement is to speak in Londonderry next week.

Sir Ken Robinson will spend three days in Derry at the invitation of the city’s urban regeneration company Ilex and a host of other bodies.

The best-selling author is expected to examine progress on education, creativity and culture in Derry, and encourage the creation of a better future through quality learning provision.

He will also speak on unlocking future potential among individuals, educators, creatives and communities. The first of the events will be a one-day conference held at Lisneal College on Monday, which will include sessions on Entitlement and Creativity Matters.

Speaking ahead of his visit, Sir Ken said: “The fact is that given the challenges we face, education doesn't need to be reformed — it needs to be transformed.

“The key to this transformation is not to standardise education, but to personalise it, to build achievement on discovering the individual talents of each child, to put students in an environment where they want to learn and where they can naturally discover their true passions.”
