Graduate Stephanie's double celebration

By Staff Reporter

There was double cause for celebration yesterday for Crossmaglen woman Stephanie Kirwan yesterday when her boyfriend proposed just minutes after her graduation ceremony.

Stephanie accepted her degree in Criminology and Social Policy at the ceremony in Queen's University.

Her boyfriend Donal Begley, also from Crossmaglen, then took her by surprise by getting down on one knee to pop the question at the garden party and Stephanie's fellow graduates cheered as she accepted the proposal.

Stephanie said: "I am absolutely ecstatic and completely shocked and overwhelmed.

"It is so surreal and is an extra special day for me - one that I will never forget."

Donal revealed that he had hatched his plan well in advance: "I had planned the engagement for around four months as I didn't want to interfere with her studies. I knew she would be looking up wedding venues straight away."

"I just thought today was a perfect time for me to propose as it is such a special occasion for Stephanie."

Also yesterday, Siobhan Fitzpatrick, chief executive of Early Years, and Professor Dr Gulsun Saglamer, who was the first women president of Istanbul Technical University, were honoured with doctorates for distinction in public service and education respectively.
