Education Minister Caitríona Ruane has presented 15 young voluntary workers from three Irish-medium youth organisations with the Open College Network Level 1 Certificate in Youth Work.

In an initiative funded by the Belfast Education and Library Board (BELB), the participants studied for the qualification totally through the medium of Irish, the first ever in Northern Ireland to do so.

Speaking as she presented the awards during a special event at Irish medium school Coláiste Feirste in Belfast, the minister said: “This is a significant step forward for Irish language youth services in the city of Belfast. Not only does this qualification represent a highly worthwhile and tangible outcome from their efforts, it also opens up exciting and inspiring future career paths.”
