Northern Ireland's first shared education campus is planned to open in September 2020.
Building work for the first of six schools to be based at Lisanelly, near Omagh, will start next January.
Stormont's Education Committee yesterday heard an update on the project from the department's deputy secretary Fiona Hepper.
Ms Hepper told MLAs "substantial progress" had been made over the first shared education campus, with the site for the first school already cleared and contracts out to tender.
Officials are reaching out to other departments that will be involved, including Health, Employment and Learning, Enterprise, Trade and Investment, and Regional Development.
Committee chairman Mervyn Storey asked how the schools would be represented in light of the decision to replace five education boards with one.
Ms Hepper said the department would keep "a close eye on membership" and react to any new body set up in the future.
