Ex-boxer’s partner ‘was mad with drink’
A woman who claimed former world boxing champion Eamonn Magee tried to throw her down stairs “would go mad” when she had a drink, a court was told.
Magee's ex-partner Maria Magill also repeatedly went back to him despite vowing to end their relationship, it was alleged.
His sister-in-law, Phyllis Magee, questioned the accuracy of Ms Magill's account as she gave evidence on his behalf.
Magee (38), of Eskdale Gardens, Belfast, has denied a charge of assault occasioning actual bodily harm against the woman he was with for six years.
Ms Magill has alleged the attack happened last September after the couple had been out at a Brian Kennedy concert and then went on to drink at a bar.
She claimed that when they went back to a flat in Glenview Street, Magee asked her to get into bed and then grabbed her by the hair.
It was alleged that he trailed her out of the room, tried to throw her down stairs and filmed her on a mobile phone.
Ms Magill claimed she suffered cuts, bruising and lost some hair during the incident.
But, according to Phyllis Magee, the alleged victim would pull her own hair out when she was nervous or drinking.
The witness told Belfast Magistrates' Court that Ms Magill said “stupid things” to her on a number of occasions about her relationship with the former WBU welterweight title holder.
“She always told me she wouldn't go back to Eamonn, but she always went back to him,” she said.
“She loves drink... she would drink nearly every night,” Ms Magee told the court.
The accused is expected to give evidence when the hearing resumes at a later date.
