Fire deaths mother and daughters buried

The funeral of Sharon Whelan and her two daughters, who died in a house fire in Kilkenny, has taken place.

Their bodies were found after a fire at their rented house in Windgap on Christmas morning.

Earlier this week a prayer service was held in Callan to remember the 30-year-old mother and her two daughters, seven-year-old Zara and two-year-old Nadia.

They were laid to rest yesterday following funeral mass at St Nicolas Church in Windgap.

Hundreds of mourners, including young schoolchildren, lined the road to St Nicholas Church as family members carried the white coffins of the children (pictured).

After the funeral they were buried at the cemetery adjoining St Nicholas Church.

Gardai are still probing the circumstances and the possibility that Ms Whelan was already dead when the fire was started.

Initially it seemed the deaths were a tragic accident, but forensic examinations led gardai to decide they will continue to keep an open mind on the cause.

It has been reported that gardai are investigating the possibility that Sharon Whelan was strangled before the fire swept through the rented farmhouse.

Their investigations are ongoing and forensic experts are continuing their examinations at the scene of the fire.
