Former teacher facing ten sex charges

A retired school principal has been charged with 10 counts of indecent assault on a young female between January and December 2005.

Dominic McElholm of Knock-Na Moe Heights was due to have a Preliminary Enquiry into his case held at the Omagh Magistrates' Court this week. However, his legal representative objected to the Preliminary Enquiry going ahead and the case was adjourned for a mixed committal hearing on April 22.

At this proceeding, some of the case will be opened before the Resident Magistrate and he will decide if there is a case to answer.

The 69-year-old McElholm was chairman of the WELB in 2007 and sat on the board as a representative of the Trustees of Maintained Schools. He was also president of the Association of Northern Ireland Education and Library Boards in 2003.

He was a teacher in Omagh for some 40 years and, before his retirement, was principal of Christ the King Primary School in Strathroy. Mr McElholm was not in court for the hearing which was adjourned. A previous hearing last month was also adjourned.
