Former top IRA man’s son gets six year sentence
The son of former veteran republican Martin Meehan has been jailed for six years, two of which will be served on probation.
Jailing 44-year-old Kevin Patrick Meehan, Belfast Crown Court Judge Corinne Philpott QC said there was a suggestion his father, who died suddenly from a heart attack in November 2007, was partly to blame for his criminality. Meehan, described as a chronic alcoholic and of no fixed abode, pleaded guilty to robbing one north Belfast shop at knife-point within half an hour of a failed attempt on another shop on February 16 this year.
Judge Philpott accepted that Meehan was remorseful and that it was clear, according to probation reports, that he is not regarded as a high risk to the public and that his return to Belfast after almost two decades in London “has been a complete mistake”.
