Funeral home’s open day with a difference

By Clare Weir

A funeral home in Co Armagh has hosted an open day with a difference.

Ian Milne of Ian Milne and Sons in Lurgan opens his doors every year to anyone who wishes to see what goes on in the organisation of a funeral.

He says the events are aimed at “taking the stress out of funerals” and preparing people for the realities and organisation of burying a relative before the worst happens.

This year Archbishop of Armagh and All Ireland Primate, the Most Reverend Alan Harper, was among the guests who attended the open day, and a special service to dedicate the town’s first purpose-built funeral church.

Other distinguished guests included the mayor of Craigavon Stephen Moutray, Upper Bann MP David Simpson and widow of the late Sir Alan McClay, Lady Heather McClay.

Local councillors, clerical figures and business men and women joined the congregation for a service and the archbishop consecrated the new building.
