Gaza campaigners take over BBC office
Campaigners protesting against the BBC’s decision not to screen an emergency appeal for Gaza have left the corporation’s Scottish offices, police said last night.
Strathclyde Police said that demonstrators who had been ‘occupying’ the lobby of BBC Scotland’s headquarters in Glasgow dispersed around 9pm. The Stop the War Coalition had claimed there were up to 200 people involved in the protest from 5pm, with demonstrators inside and outside the building at Pacific Quay.
A Strathclyde Police spokesman earlier said there were 40 to 50 protesters |involved. The police had monitored the situation but no |arrests were made.
Among those lending support last night was Solidarity leader Tommy Sheridan. He said: “Solidarity members are involved in this protest, I salute their action and call on the BBC to be impartial. Israeli PM Olmert has made it clear he considers war crimes against Palestinians by the IDF to be justified.
“The BBC are joining him in presenting humanitarian aid to Gazans as action against Israel.”
