Grieving widow tells of attack with two-foot axe

The grieving widow of John Mongan (30), who was beaten to death at his Fallswater Street home in west Belfast on February 7, 2008, has claimed one of his alleged killers “looked him in the eye” before landing a blow with a two-foot long axe.

Julia Mongan, at Belfast Crown Court, claimed that her cousin Christopher Stokes: ”stood in front of John for like a couple of seconds, just looking him in the eye...then Christie rose the axe and brought it down on John.”

Christopher Stokes (34), from Glengalia, and 38-year-old Edward Gabriel Stokes, from Cornfields, both her cousins from Londonderry, and a 16-year-old boy, who cannot be named, deny murder and causing criminal damage to his Mitsibushi Shogun jeep.

Mr Stokes denies a further charge of wounding Mrs Mongan with intent to inflict grievous bodily harm.
