Crisis is Stormont's top priority

Stormont leaders have said their priority is dealing with the coronavirus crisis after cancelling a St Patrick's trip to the US.

First Minister Arlene Foster and Deputy First Minister Michelle O'Neill will remain in Northern Ireland to focus on efforts to contain the spread of Covid-19.

The leaders had already cancelled the New York leg of their itinerary in the US.

They will also miss a series of engagements in the US capital, including the traditional St Patrick's reception at the White House.

Mrs Foster said: "Whilst it is an enormous opportunity to showcase Northern Ireland, our priority is dealing with the spread of Coronavirus."

Ms O'Neill added: "We have decided to suspend our travel since our full attention is on civil contingency planning around the coronavirus outbreak and protecting public health."
