The number of coronavirus-related deaths in Italy, the centre of the pandemic in Europe, has passed 1,000.
The country's positive cases continued their upward trend yesterday, with 15,113 confirmed cases now registered and 1,016 people dead.
More than half the people in intensive care in Italy are in the hard-hit Lombardy province, which yesterday reported 605 ICU patients in a region with only 610 ICU beds.
Hospitals in Lombardy are overflowing with the dead and seriously ill.
The province's top healthcare official Giulio Gallera said that at the request of local hospitals the region had simplified the bureaucracy needed to process death certificates and bury the dead.
On Monday Italian premier Giuseppe Conte put his entire country on lockdown to combat the coronavirus.
