Queen's University Belfast has postponed all large-scale events with immediate effect to combat the spread of coronavirus.
The measure does not, however, include lectures or other teaching activities, although that is under constant review.
The university strongly advised against all non-essential travel for business or study, including field trips outside of Northern Ireland. It did not recommend an immediate return of those currently outside of Northern Ireland and guests were also discouraged from entering student accommodation.
Ulster University, meanwhile, said it had issued guidance to all students and staff in line with Public Health Agency recommendations.
"We will continue to monitor the evolving situation and have established a working group taking advice from the relevant agencies to put in place suitable measures," it added.
