Special Olympics pushed back

The Special Olympics Ireland Winter Games, which were due to take place here for the first time next week, have been postponed due to coronavirus.

The games were due to take place from March 20 to 22, in Armagh, Lisburn and Craigavon.

Almost 200 athletes were due to compete in the games, which are the qualifying event for the Special Olympics World Winter Games in Sweden next February.

Special Olympics Ireland chief executive Matt English said the decision to postpone had been taken "with much regret".

"This decision was made after considerable assessment of the evolving situation," he added.

"This is very disappointing news for everyone, especially our athletes who have been looking forward to these games for some time. It is our intention to reschedule the event towards the end of the year."
