Health Minister Edwin Poots has launched a strategy to tackle skin cancer

Health Minister Edwin Poots has launched a 10-year strategy aimed at reducing skin cancer in Northern Ireland.

The plan focuses on prevention and early detection of skin cancers and pays particular attention to children and young people, and those who spend large periods of time outdoors.

The minister said: "Although Northern Ireland is not known for its sunny climate, we should be mindful that skin cancer is the most common form of cancer here, with around 3,000 people being affected each year.

"By reducing sun exposure, and avoiding sunbed use entirely, the majority of our population can significantly decrease their risk of developing this particular form of cancer."
