One young person a day in A&E over self-harm in Northern Ireland
More than one young person a day is arriving for emergency hospital care for self-harm or suicidal thoughts, new figures have revealed.
Over a nine-month period last year a total of 338 children and teenagers under 16 turned up at hospital A&E departments across Northern Ireland.
An Ulster Unionist MLA has claimed the real situation is likely to be "much worse". Jo-Anne Dobson said: "If the problem goes unchecked the health authorities are condemning a generation to risk of self-harm and suicide."
The Upper Bann MLA, who is the party's health spokesperson, voiced shock as it emerged the 338 young people turned up between April 1 and December 31 last year.
The total is the equivalent of more than one for each day.
