Hoax bomb alerts an ‘attack on democracy’
Security alerts at two polling stations in Co Armagh have been declared hoaxes.
Suspect objects were found close to Lurgan Model Primary School at Brownlow Terrace and Tannaghmore Primary School at about 6am yesterday.
Voting was allowed to continue while Army bomb experts examined the scene. However traffic was diverted along William Street, North Street and Antrim Road and also along North Circular Road and Lake Street away from the polling stations.
The area was reopened at about 11am. A spokeswoman for the PSNI confirmed both incidents had been hoaxes.
SDLP Upper Bann MLA Dolores Kelly, who was threatened by an armed man while canvassing in the Kilwilkie estate in Lurgan, branded the bomb alerts a “blatant attack on democracy”.
She said: “There are faceless individuals who seem to think they can interfere in the democratic process. They have no support in the community.
Sinn Fein MLA John O’ Dowd said those behind the bomb scares were afraid of the electorate.
