Homes are evacuated in pipe-bomb incident

A pipe-bomb which was left in south Belfast could have caused death or serious injury had it exploded, an MLA has said.

Police found the device, described as crude but viable, around 11am yesterday following reports of suspicious activity at Fane Street in the Village area.

The scene was cordoned off, Army Technical Officers attended and a controlled explosion was carried out. Homes were evacuated and train services were also disrupted.

Alliance MLA Anna Lo said those responsible for the device had no regard for human life.

“I am outraged that this viable pipe-bomb was left in such a dangerous position,” she said.

“The people who left this pipe-bomb have no regard for the lives of other people.”
