Hot bidding expected for Joey Dunlop auction print

By Lesley-Anne Henry

This limited edition print, signed by the late champion road racer Joey Dunlop, is expected to raise thousands of pounds when it goes under the hammer for charity.

Entitled 'One for the Road', the print is among a host of items up for auction at a gala ball for Friends of the Cancer Centre on Saturday at the Europa Hotel and marks the charity's first anniversary.

Formerly known as Friends of Montgomery House, Belvoir Park Hospital, Friends of the Cancer Centre is based at Belfast City Hospital and helps fund services for patients and their families.

Cancer patient and ball organiser Barbara Johnston, from Larne, said the event would mark a "tremendous" first year.

She said: "I am delighted to put something back as the care and compassion shown to my family and me was wonderful. A lot of essential equipment and patient services would not be available today if it wasn't for the Friends. It is this support that enables families like mine to have the chance of a better future."

Friends' fund-raising manager Colleen Shaw said it would be a night to remember.

She added: "Friends will have a birthday to remember and so will 50 staff from the Cancer Centre after an anonymous donor paid for them to go to the ball. One year on, the charity is well positioned at the heart of the Cancer Centre, with a committed team of volunteers and supporters helping cancer patients and their families for many years."

As part of their launch last year, Friends donated £1.25m to fund the Friends of the Cancer Centre Chair in Radiation Oncology at Queen's University.

Bids for the print can be made by those not attending the ball and anyone wishing to make a donation should call Colleen on: (028) 9069 9393; 07891 081537 or email at
