By Emily Moulton

A new recycling facility capable of processing up to 50,000 tonnes of waste wood has been officially opened in Newry.

Environment Minister Arlene Foster was on hand to open Urban Forest Ltd's new facilities and praised the company's innovative approach to re-using waste wood.

The company received financial backing from Invest Northern Ireland and the Waste and Resources Action Programme and now has the capacity to process more than 50,000 tonnes of high quality animal bedding and supplies many of the world's leading racing yards including those of the Aga Khan.

The Minister said the company's work was a good example of environmental and business best practice.

"It is an excellent illustration of what public sector and private enterprise can achieve when we work together," she said.

The Minister also paid tribute to Invest NI and the Waste and Resources Action Programme (WRAP) which played a majorrole in helping the business develop.

"Urban Forest is proof that Northern Ireland, through innovation, can have successful economic development while also protecting the environment," she added.
