Ireland's highest pub Ponderosa aims for new heights

By Staff Reporter

Stormont's tallest minister has re-opened Ireland’s highest pub.

Environment Minister Mark H Durkan cut the ribbon to officially open the newly refurbished Ponderosa.

The famous pub and restaurant’s refurbished facilities on the Glenshane Pass incorporate a coffee shop, new kitchen, toilets, smoking areas and off-licence. It will employ more than 20 staff.

Mr Durkan said: “This is a unique, stunning location and the Ponderosa is a marvellous facility for locals, tourists and motorists stopping off for something to eat.

“The redevelopment will contribute to the catering and tourist infrastructure around Dungiven and Maghera and will provide valuable employment opportunities in the local area.

“Granting planning permission for the refurbishment of the Ponderosa supports my vision for a stronger economy through the promotion of tourism.”

The Ponderosa is situated by the main A6 Belfast to Derry road.
