Irish Finance Minister Brian Lenihan admits himself to hospital

Irish Finance Minister Brian Lenihan admitted himself to hospital yesterday after losing sleep and experiencing discomfort with a suspected hernia problem.

Mr Lenihan was absent from the Dail as his public sector pay cut was passed by the Government by 80 votes to 69.

The minister was due to go into the Mater Private Hospital later this week for an operation but went in early yesterday instead.

Mr Lenihan has endured a hectic 20 months since taking over as Finance Minister, just as the economic crisis got going.

He has just passed his third Budget in 14 months, along with the NAMA legislation and the bank guarantee scheme and ongoing pumping of taxpayers' money into the institutions.

The minister attended the Oireachtas finance committee Christmas dinner in Fire Restaurant on Tuesday night, where he was reported to be in good form.
