Knife victim originally from Tyrone

Gardai are probing the suspicious death of a popular shop worker found with slash wounds in the hallway of a townhouse.

A post-mortem will be carried out today on the body of Anthony Kelly of Grove Court, Mullingar, Co Westmeath.

Mr Kelly, who was in his 30s and believed to be originally from Tyrone, was discovered in the hallway of the townhouse apartment which he shared with a friend.

Emergency services were alerted shortly after 7am when one of the occupants of the house made the grim discovery as they were leaving for work. He had suffered severe slash wounds.

A team of Garda technical experts spent the day examining the scene.

Superintendant John Gantley said last night: “At present we are treating this as a suspicious death and we won't know more until we have the results of the post mortem available to us.”

All options are being considered by gardai at this stage, including whether the victim could have been violently assaulted or whether his wounds were self inflicted.

People living in the area expressed shock at the tragedy.
