Man charged over death of local athlete hit by car

A 23-year-old man has appeared before Londonderry Magistrate’s Court in connection with the death of local athlete Martin Gallagher.

Jonathan McGonigle (22), from Moyola Drive in Derry, appeared in relation to a charge of causing Mr Gallagher’s death by dangerous driving. He is also charged with failing to stop and remain at the scene of an accident at Racecourse Road on November 1, failing to report it to the police, driving while unfit and without either a licence or insurance.

Martin Gallagher (25), from Sandale Park in Derry, was returning home following the city’s Halloween celebrations when he was hit by a car.

Family members of the athlete were in court yesterday.

Judge McNally ordered the defendant to return on May 10.
