Man freed after being questioned over death

A man being questioned over the murder of 38-year-old James McConnell in Londonderry last year has been released.

A PSNI spokesman said a 42-year-old man arrested in Derry on Monday was released unconditionally yesterday afternoon.

A second man — aged 44 who was also arrested on Monday — remained in police custody yesterday and was assisting detectives with their inquiries.

Mr McConnell was murdered by two masked men at Woodland Avenue, Prehen.

He was shot four times in the body during the early hours of Wednesday, February 11, 2009.

Police had approached him in October 2008 about his personal safety.

The week before his murder Mr McConnell had been arrested and questioned following a drug search of his Prehen address.

No charges were brought by police at the time and he was released.

Previously the 38-year-old had been jailed for three years and six months, followed by 18 months probation for a drugs-related offence which took place in 2007.
