Man pulled from Newry canal in a critical condition

A man who was rescued from Newry canal is in a critical condition in hospital.

The man was recovered by a passer-by yesterday morning.

He was found in the water close to the Quays Shopping Centre shortly after 10am.

John White, who rescued the man, was alerted by a woman at the edge of the waterway.

He said: “I gave her my personal belongings and jumped in. I swam 50 or 60 metres and got hold of the chap.

“Everyone did their bit. I went into the water, the security guards hauled us out and the police did the resuscitation.

“It’s one of those things — you see it before you and you go for it. I hope the guy is okay.”
