Man quizzed over woman's death

By Claire McNeilly

A man was last night being questioned by police over the death of a woman in Newcastle.

Her body was discovered in a house in the Kenway Drive area of the Co Down town on Tuesday night.

The former nurse, who was aged in her 50s, has been named locally as Claire Tumelty.

She is believed to have lived at the rented property, which is off the Bryansford Road, for the last six months, along with her son. A PSNI spokeswoman said the death was being treated as suspicious.

No further details about the incident will be released until a post-mortem examination is carried out later today .

The Belfast Telegraph understands that the body of the victim, a mother-of-three, was discovered in a bath at her home.

The area around the housing development has remained cordoned off by police since they made the grim discovery.

One neighbour, who asked not to be named, said a number of police officers first arrived at the woman’s house on Tuesday night after 10pm.

A man was last night continuing to help police with their enquiries.
