Man shot during botched robbery

Dissidents have been blamed for shooting a 30-year-old man in both legs during a botched robbery in south Armagh.

Shortly before 9pm on Saturday two men armed with guns attempted to rob the man at his home the Gullion View area of Meigh.

The armed robbers demanded money before shooting him in both legs.

It is understood the man’s wife was also in the house at the time of the robbery.

The robbers left empty-handed and are believed to have made off in a vehicle.

The victim was taken to Daisy Hill hospital in Newry where he is said to be in a stable condition.

Newry and Mourne District Sinn Fein Councillor Packie McDonald blamed dissident republicans and said the man’s family is “shocked and bewildered” by the attack. He added: “This family have no political connections. The men demanded money, but were very evasive.

“There is no doubt in my mind that this was the work of dissident republicans. This activity is not wanted.”
