Miss Northern Ireland Cherie Gardiner launches Rose Week

A special ‘Gardiner' was on hand to help launch the annual Rose Week event at Lady Dixon Park yesterday.

The show which attracts thousands of visitors to the city, begins next Tuesday July 14 and runs until Sunday July 19. And as our pictures show Miss Northern Ireland Cherie Gardiner was only too pleased to help with the launch.

Besides the beautiful gardens and the international rose competition, entertainment for all ages will be on offer. Rose Week organiser Alice Blennerhassett said: “The event gets bigger every year, but it’s not just for the green fingered.

“Children can enjoy face painters and other entertainment while parents can take in the displays of beautiful roses.”

Competitions in the Rose Garden begin at noon on Tuesday and run daily from 10am to 8pm.

“The big day is of course Wednesday when the international judges will be assessing the entries in the City of Belfast Rose Trials, with the winners being announced at the Rose Dinner on Wednesday night,” said Alice.

She added: “We are keen to encourage people to be green and travel to Sir Thomas and Lady Dixon by public transport with a special shuttle service leaving Europa bus centre daily from 1.00pm.”
