Neil Lennon's treat for his rival boss aged nine

By Pat Hurst

Neil Lennon had to fend off an ambitious bid by a football-mad nine-year-old who applied for the vacant manager's job at Bolton Wanderers, it has emerged.

Little Thomas Fielding told the chairman his players were slow, unfit and overweight in his pitch for to be boss.

After his honest assessment of the team, Thomas added: "I know that I am young but I am cheap."

Despite listing his own football experience with Oxford Grove under-10s, the board instead opted for Lurgan-born Lennon, the former Northern Ireland skipper and ex-Celtic manager.

Yesterday, Lennon surprised the youngster with a surprise visit to his football training session.
